Modeling Well-Mannered Society with Emotional Agents to Promote Students’ Learning

Undergraduate #175
Discipline: Computer Sciences and Information Management
Subcategory: Computer Engineering

Hohite Fetene - Benedict College
Co-Author(s): Mohammed Abdi and Hong Jiang

Emotions have the power to express intense feelings and are important for the lives of humankind. Emotional agents in a virtual world can be used to attract, inspire, motivate, stimulate and encourage students to attain their future goal as well as their future manner. This undergraduate research focuses on modeling well-mannered society with emotional agents to promote student learning. The paper reviews the basic advantages of using emotional agents for educational purpose, the benefits of designing computer games to create wellmannered society, and how the emotional agents are powerful to influence students’ success positively. It adopts theories of Frijda and Roseman to deal with emotion as a concern and ongoing process using different steps respectively. We designed a simulated computer game to model a well-mannered society and we used StarLogo TNG as our programming tool. StarLogo TNG is a modeling and simulation software used to create agents and 3D graphics in a simpler way. The designed simulation game contains several emotional agents to promote student learning. This phenomena encourages students to have good manner and attain success.
