Mentoring 101: Finding Your Mentors and Becoming a Great Mentee – (October 2, 2025)
How can you find the mentors you need? Will they be a good match for you? What are the best ways to cultivate beneficial mentor-mentee relationships? This interactive session will highlight the importance and value of strong, positive mentor-mentee relationships for student development and success. Participants will be guided through a self-reflection exercise to better understand what they need in a mentor. Practical insights will be shared on how to identify different types of mentors, characteristics of good mentors and how to build a supportive mentoring team. Speakers will also discuss setting expectations, mentee responsibilities and advice if problems arise.
ERN 2026 – How to Prepare an Excellent STEM Research Abstract (August 25, 2025)
In preparation for the 2026 Emerging Researchers National Conference in STEM, on March 19th – 21st, 2026 in Atlanta, Georgia, this webinar will provide tips and information on how to create high-quality STEM research presentation abstracts for both oral and poster presentations. The key and essential parts of every abstract such as: hypothesis, statement of the problem, methods, results and discussion of findings, conclusions, future work, and key references will be covered. Participants will have a chance to ask questions in order to prepare for submitting the 2026 ERN Student STEM Research Presentation Abstracts that are due September 12, 2026 at 11:59pm EST.
Abolishing Ableism in STEMM: The Past, Present, and Future (June 26, 2025) – ERN STEMM Summer Series
A conversation with Dr. Bonnielin Swenor, founding director of the Johns Hopkins Disability Health Research Center, disability equity researcher, and disability advocate. This discussion will explore Dr. Swenor’s personal and professional journey as a disabled researcher, highlighting both the barriers she has faced and the ways she has pushed for change. This session will also explore how the long fight for disability rights in the U.S. offers insight and hope for fostering more inclusive STEMM environments, even during challenging times.
STEMM professional societies are best positioned to achieve their missions when the communities they serve are thriving. In this ERN webinar, panelists from the Professional STEMM Societies Working Group and the Students and Professionals with Disabilities Working Group share findings, experiences, and recommendations from their work on building thriving communities in STEMM professional societies.
College life in STEMM fields can be exciting yet challenging, often accompanied by demanding coursework, high expectations, and the pressure to succeed. This workshop is designed to help STEMM students build resilience, prioritize mental wellness, and create a foundation for long-term success. Participants will explore common challenges such as imposter syndrome, burnout, and academic stress while learning evidenced-based strategies to manage these obstacles. Through engaging discussions, students will gain tools to enhance their emotional well-being and foster a growth mindset.

Entry Point! Journeys: Past and Present
A panel of Entry Point! alumni will discuss their journeys from STEM education to STEM career – four alumni will discuss the support and accommodations that helped them to succeed in their STEM classes, laboratory, and out-of-lab activities. They will present their views on the different accommodations and support systems available in the 1980-90’s versus what has since changed and is available today.

Back to School and “Out” of School in a New Paradigm of Teaching, Learning, and Conducting Research
The ERN team presented a panel webinar with a community panel to discuss the challenges of education in the modern climate. The global pandemic has created a new paradigm in the education sector that affects, all aspects of teaching, learning, and conducting research. Our panel delved into these subjects and talk about how they and their organizations seek to overcome the current landscape of obstacles and produce results.
The Making & Innovation Community’s Response to COVID-19
We will have presentations and a panel discussion featuring Dorothy Jones-Davis, Executive Director for the Nation of Makers, Nina Archie, Project Manager, and Diversity Tech Policy Advisor of The Commercializer, and Joey Womack, Founder of Goodie Nation and Startup Labs Manager, WeWork. Together they will share the importance of having a diverse set of problem solvers, who are engaged in the maker movement, technology and commercialization, and entrepreneurship to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic.

Continuing our regular webinar series, the ERN team is presenting a webinar interview with NIH’s lead scientist on the COVID-19 vaccine. Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett sits down with Dr. Iris R. Wagstaff, AAAS STEM Program Director and ERN Conference Lead, to share her journey in STEM and her work on the COVID-19 vaccine development. Dr. Corbett will also share tips on persevering in STEM and staying on task with educational and career goals at this critical time in our country. We hope this interview will be inspiring and serve as an example of excellence in STEM to our ERN community.

Preparing an Industry-focused Resume
The demand for STEM-capable employees is higher than ever. In an ever-changing workplace environment, it is critical for STEM majors and recent graduates to create and maintain an excellent resume that will communicate and leverage their skills and experience. There are multiple industries that employ STEM talent such as the pharmaceuticals, healthcare, technology, food and drug, and chemical industries. The Resume Preparation webinar will provide tips, advice and strategies on how to craft an excellent and effective resume for undergraduate and graduate STEM majors, as well as, early STEM professionals.
